Basslink Telecoms is the ONLY alternative network owner and operator of bandwidth to Tasmania from Victoria to that of Telstra.
The Basslink Telecoms network is the result of several years hard work to design, contract and implement the necessary technology capable of transmitting data reliably on such a unique asset.
In 2007, Basslink committed to the creation of Basslink Telecoms, using the assets of the HVDC Interconnector and was operational by July 2009, when the first customer generated traffic flowed from Melbourne to Hobart.
Basslink Telecoms has been in part responsible for:
- delivering infrastructure based competition in backhaul to Tasmania resulting in improved wholesale backhaul pricing
- providing reliable bandwidth that allows for the entry of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to deliver Digital Synchronous Line (DSL) services in Tasmania
- breaking the incumbent monopoly on backhaul, kick-starting the NBN activity in Tasmania
- effectively disaster-proofing the Tasmanian telecoms market at an infrastructure and carrier level
Since operations commenced, Basslink Telecoms has greatly exceeded its operational targets.
The Basslink HVDC Interconnector is integral to Basslink Telecoms, but it does not extend to Melbourne or Hobart, rather it only extends from Traralgon, Victoria to Georgetown, Tasmania. In order for Basslink Telecoms to carry traffic between Hobart and Melbourne, it utilises a number of land segments to create an end to end transmission route.
Diverse Victorian fibre paths form a protected optical fibre ring between Melbourne Points of Presence ( PoPs) and Loy Yang in southern Victoria. In Melbourne there are two carrier grade Points of Presence (PoPs) in pre-established carrier grade data centres.
On the Tasmanian side, once traffic exits the Interconnector, it traverses TasGovNet (“TGN”) to Hobart, when traffic is delivered to two carrier PoPs.
Protection and Diversity
In Victoria, traffic is protected by virtue of geographically separated fibre optic trunks travelling from Melbourne to Hobart.
Under the Bass Strait, the Basslink HVDC Interconnector is buried 2m under the seabed and over the top of the fibre optic cable lie two electricity cables, inherently protecting the fibre optic from any potential shipping threat or marine disaster.
In Tasmania, diverse Tasmanian land segments form a protected optical fibre ring between the TGN gas pipeline offtake and Hobart PoPs.
The network is also built to be electronically redundant to the maximum extent possible, thereby eliminating the risk of single card failure in the network.
