Malcolm Eccles was appointed CEO and Managing Director of Basslink in September 2007, before this he was responsible for all operational and engineering management for National Grid Australia, this included leading the commissioning of the Basslink facility. Malcolm joined National Grid in April 2005.
Prior to this Malcolm was the Service Delivery Manager with Siemens Power, Transmission and Distribution (“Siemens PTD”) in Ireland. In this role he had overall responsibility for developing and managing a power services business in Ireland as well as managing the operations and maintenance contract on the Moyle HVDC Interconnector. Malcolm was with Siemens PTD from June 2002 until April 2005.
Malcolm’s engineering career started with a 16-year stint with British Nuclear Fuels Limited, initially serving an apprenticeship as an Instrument Technician. He worked in various departments during his time with BNFL. When he left BNFL Malcolm was a commissioning manager in the major projects group.
He has global experience having worked in Asia, North America, Europe and Australia.
Malcolm is a director of CityGas in Singapore, joining the board in October 2011. CityGas is the sole manufacturer and retailer of town gas in Singapore, it has over 630,000 customers. Malcolm is also chairman of the CitySpring group HSSE (health, safety, security & environment) committee. This committee sets and manages HSSE policy and performance for all CitySpring owned businesses.Malcolm is also a non-executive director of Gippsland Water. Gippsland Water looks after the water and wastewater (sewage) services in Central Gippsland, Victoria. It services an area of just over 5000 square kilometres and a population of more than 130,000 people.
He is a director and executive committee member of the International Cable Protection Committee Ltd (“ICPC”) a worldwide organisation specialising in submarine cable infrastructure. Malcolm chairs the revenue and membership committee of the ICPC.
Malcolm is a Chartered Electrical Engineer and member of the Institute of Engineering Technology (IET) and a senior member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a member the Chartered Management Institute (UK).
He holds a Master of Science degree (MSc) in Electrical Engineering and Management Studies, a Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management, a Post Graduate Diploma in Strategic Management and is also NEBOSH qualified in occupational health and safety. He is also a past attendee of the prestigious ‘Advanced Management Program’ delivered by Henley Management College (UK).
Malcolm is responsible for determining overall business and operational strategies of Basslink, including Basslink Telecoms and Basslink Consulting. As CEO & MD of Basslink Pty Ltd, Basslink Telecoms Pty Ltd and Basslink Consulting Pty Ltd he serves on the board of directors for all the Australian businesses.
