Bass Strait agreement delivers broadband competition to Tasmania
Aurora Energy and Basslink have today signed a contract under which they will each deliver nationally competitive broadband services to Tasmania.

"Basslink Telecoms owns the only non-Telstra fibre optic cables across the Bass Strait. From early 2009, Basslink Telecoms will offer high speed secured transmission services between Hobart in Tasmania and Melbourne in Victoria. The network design comprises the following:
- Two Basslink access PoPs in Melbourne
- Diverse Victorian land segments forming protected optical fibre ring between Melbourne PoPs and Loy Yang in southern Victoria
- 360km of undersea Basslink owned fibre optic cables between Loy Yang, Victoria and George Town, Tasmania.

Buried 2 metres into seabed across Bass Strait
High power co-directional Raman amplifiers
- Tasmanian land segment via TasGovNet ("TGN"), buried underneath high-pressure gas pipeline
- Diverse Tasmanian land segments forming protected optical fibre ring between TGN gas pipeline offtake and Hobart PoPs
- Two Basslink access PoPs in Hobart
